Flowers

New Zealand has some strange but beautiful flowers. Though primitive in some cases like the Ribbonwood. They are very appealing for their quirky sculptural qualities. Many flowers are very small and occur in clusters. Some grow straight out of the trunk. I have chosen a few that hold a strong appeal for me.

Long Box

The long box is named after its shape. When using in a composition two squares (180 mm x 180 mm) will sit along its length. That is two Long Boxes set side by side cover the space of two squares. The shapes are derived from New Zealand flora and are sculpted into high relief forms.

New Zealand Native Birds

The birds of New Zealand have always been a strong inspiration. My interpretation of the cheeky fantail, Piwakawaka, has been a popular purchase over the years. Other birds include the Tui, Kereru, Kingfisher, Hihi (Stitchbird), Kokako and Ruru. The Ruru, Kokako and Hihi may be viewed under Objects.

For the past two years I have been spurred on to make more birds due to my association with Tiritiri Matangi Open Sanctuary to help raise funds and awareness of our precious and endangered species. To date these projects have been on the Hihi (Stitchbird) and the Kokako, see the media page for more information.

While on Tiritiri you are faced with a rowdy number of Tui which I have rendered into a set of three flying off.
