The Saddlback or Tieke is one of the 3 wattle birds of New Zealand. The others being the Kokako and the now extinct Huia.
I first encountered the Saddleback on Tiritiri Matangi island while observing the rounds of the researchers studying the chicks of the Hihi.
The saddle backs flit about in the under growth probably scratching out bugs, though it may be a display for the strangers in their territory.
The most common place to observe them is on the flax bushes where they jump left and right up the long flower stems seeking the nectar.
